Save or Splurge: Beauty Sponges

These two popular makeup sponges are surprisingly different – and not just in terms of shape. Plus, one is more than twice the price of the other. Is the Beautyblender worth shelling out for? Or should you save your cash and stick with Real Techniques? Let’s talk Save or Splurge!

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge, £5.99:

The Good –

  • Great for speed, gets base on fast.
  • Sheers out product for a hydrated, natural finish.
  • Affordable.

The Less Good –

  • Absorbs product.
  • Holds on to excess water, hard to wring out.
  • Difficult to clean.

Beautyblender, £16:

The Good –

  • Makes product go further.
  • Adds hydration without reducing coverage.
  • Easy to clean.

The Less Good –

  • Takes time to blend.
  • Pricey.
  • Leaks pink dye when you wash it.

Overall, the Beautyblender gives a better result. Though I like them both. Using either sponge achieves a great finish, blends foundation and concealer to look more skin-like than a brush. And the Real Techniques is great in a rush. But it has a major flaw.

It is such a pain to clean. You should replace your beauty sponge every 1-3 months, but the Real Techniques sponge never lasts me longer than a month, even with every day cleaning.

The Beautyblender, I keep much longer. It absorbs less product, so washes easier and feels good to use for two months. Not so pricey after all. Plus, you have to factor in the difference in application. It gives more coverage, makes product go further. Saving more money.

There is a clear winner. It leaks pink dye, which is mildly troubling. But all told, the Beautyblender is the better buy. Vote Splurge.

Til next time,

Hayley

I completely agree, the Beauty Blender is much better, I have some of the Brush Works sponges and they are really good, much better than the RT and cheaper if you wanted a cheaper option to use along side the BB 🙂 xxxx
