Once a day suncream is possibly my favourite beauty product of all time. It’s certainly one of my most repurchased. What a great invention. Because applying suncream is not a good time. All that rubbing. In public. Worst of all is on beach application. No matter how well you try to clean your hands, you’re in for some sandy exfoliation right there.
But suncream that needs just one application is different. It can be applied in the privacy of your bathroom. Then lasts all day. My favourite of the genre is the Piz Buin 1 Day Long Long Lasting Sun Lotion SPF30, £10. It’s a thick lotion, like regular suncream, but much more easily absorbed. Minimal rubbing required. Moisturising but not too greasy.
There are caveats. You cannot miss patches. Cover every inch, ears, each individual toe. If you swim extensively you will need to reapply. On holiday, I actually apply it twice a day – before breakfast and again after lunch – to cover all bases. One tube applied twice a day lasts me about a week.
The face is different. I prefer a specific facial suncream that is less shiny, doesn’t block pores and can be reapplied frequently. The Clinique City Block Sheer SPF25, £18.50, is my top pick for everyday wear but for sunbathing the La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Dry Touch Gel Cream SPF50+, £16.50, is the business. This anti shine suncream helps avoid the sticky suncream face look, and the breakouts that follow it.
